Giorgio Armani On Prada

THOUGHTS: The fine line for fine lines…and design.

posted by Fashion Copious

“I’ve wanted to say something about this for awhile, and now’s the time: fashion is in the in the hands of the banks (and) the stock market,” Armani told reporters Tuesday. “It no longer belongs to the owners, but to those above them. I still haven’t been able to understand how the banks influence our line of work — it’s a mystery.”

Asked if the comments were a reference to Prada’s move earlier this month to become the first top European fashion house to be listed on the Hong Kong exchange, Armani, 76, declared: “I don’t have debts. Instead, Prada’s problem is that they have to pay back the money that the banks spent to build up the brand.” Armani said he preferred to remain independent, and had no plans to sell the company. “There are thousands of ways to make money. But for me, I don’t want to wind up having to knock on the door of some Thai managers to explain myself.”

He said that Prada chief Miuccia Prada was “ingenious” for her “irony…and bad taste that becomes chic.” But he complained that certain collections that are “sometimes ugly” always get positive coverage in the press. “You know why…”

Prada refused comment.

Chloe go back to the archives

THOUGHTS: …these are just fun and can be worn by most any woman.

by Tania Braukamper

With any Chloe collection comes a certain expectation. Its an expectation of effortless glamour, an expectation that you’ll fall in love at first sight with the soft Parisian quality and mood of the clothing. How new Creative Director Clare Waight Keller will interpret the Chloe mood and how her designs will line up with those expectations won’t be seen until spring 2012 hits – but in the meantime a Resort 2012 collection full of sophisticated ’70s influences, put together by Chloe’s design team while the brand’s leads are in transition, lives up to it without difficulty.

Jacquelyn Jablonski is Chloe’s girl about town in floating pleats, ’70s wide leg pants, structured coats and romantic sheers; and all in all its an archival-based collection that won’t disappoint any Chloe fan.

QUESTION: Can someone explain to me the tie between the economy, hemlines, and highheels? Ah…and here you go.

“If you look at the merchandise mix that is in the stores right now, there is a preponderance of basics, because in rough economic times, people shop for replacement clothes,” says (John) Mincarelli.

But if sales of mini skirts do take off, analysts say that would be a good sign for the economy and the retail sector, because it would show that consumers are willing to take a chance on an article of clothing that is completely different, not just something to replace an item that has worn out.

“When you see a trend that does stick, that is a good sign that people are willing to invest in their wardrobe,” says NPDFashionworld’s Cohen.

Asked if there is a correlation between higher heels and recessions, he
said: “I think there certainly is an escapist aspect to it. Despite the
discomfort, women continue to wear them. For many, it’s a sense of
beauty, which in turn gives confidence. And in tough times, maybe that’s
what people are looking for.”
