Ridley Scott’s Alien Prequel is Now Prometheus

THOUGHTS: Ok…I’ll admit, Alien and Giger ‘most popular works’ where the biggest influences during my product design training…so much so, I will say they inspired the design that I received my us patent for — Ergonomically designed telephone handset.

20th Century Fox has made it official: Ridley Scott’s long-gestating “Alien” prequel has now been rechristened “Prometheus”, and Noomi Rapace has boarded the project as its female lead, a scientist name Elizabeth Shaw.

“While ‘Alien’ was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place,” says Scott, “The keen fan will recognize strands of ‘Alien’s’ DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”

“In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots,” adds Damon Lindelof, who worked with Scott to rewrite an original draft by Jon Spaihts, “I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true.”

The big question now: will “Prometheus” still show us the origins of those “Alien” Space Jockeys? It doesn’t appear as if that’s viable now if the movie has veered completely away from the “Alien” franchise, which is a shame, as I was really looking forward to seeing where those huge freaks of sci-fi nature came from. Oh well.

“Prometheus” launches into space March 9, 2012.

Will 2011 Host the Biggest Summer for Movies Ever?

By: Erik Davis

Is 2011 the biggest summer for movies ever? It could be, and as Jon Favreau (who’s directing 2011′s Cowboys and Aliens) recently pointed out in an interview with Hero Complex, the summer of 2011 is also shaping up to be an absolute “blood bath,” with all the big blockbusters (with exploding budgets) competing against each other for those all-too-valuable box office dollars. Favreau says, “There’s not a weekend where there won’t be teeth on the floor. The audience wins but it’s going to be rough for people making these movies. Then there was the big rush to 3D, so you have all of these people fighting for a limited number of screens and to get the 3D done, since most of these are hybrids or conversions, so this is a technology that is still in the relatively early stages and there’s going to be a lot of blood pressures going up in the months ahead.”

Summer Movies 2011

Don’t know which films are coming out next summer? Well, for starters, we have …

And that’s just scratching the surface. If 2011 does turn out to be the biggest summer of all time, it may not hold that title for long because 2012 already promises to be packed with equal amounts of blockbuster flare, with The Avengers, Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises already looking to do damage.

What do you think? Can 2011 host the biggest movie summer ever? Which summer are you looking forward to more: 2011 or 2012?
